About CaltechDATA

Caltech Library runs a campus-wide data repository to preserve the accomplishments of Caltech researchers and share their results with the world: CaltechDATA.

The service enables researchers to upload research data, link data with their publications, and assign a permanent DOI so that others can reference the data set. The repository can link with a Github account to automatically preserve software releases. All Caltech researchers can deposit data or software at data.caltech.edu.

Terms

Scope: The Caltech Research Data Repository (CaltechDATA) is a service of the Caltech Library. The service is for the use of Caltech faculty, staff and students, and research collaborations to which they belong. These terms and conditions apply to the Depositor's use of the service and to the data and other materials deposited to the repository.

License: In depositing content to CaltechDATA the Depositor acknowledges that the Caltech Library has a non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual license to use, duplicate and distribute the deposited content, and to transfer the content to any format or medium now known or later developed for archiving, preservation and access purposes. Depositor retains the right to publish and/or share the deposited content as provided by the Institute Copyright and Software Policy.

Embargo status: Users may deposit content under an embargo status and provide an end date for the embargo. The repository will restrict access to the data until the end of the embargo period; at which time, the content will become publicly available automatically. Users assume responsibility for complying with funder, publisher, or organizational embargo requirements (such as the Graduate School policy on thesis embargo).

Retention period: Caltech Library intends to retain all deposited content indefinitely, but reserves the right to remove content that violates any of these Terms of Deposit or which fails to meet minimum standards for retention. These include but are not limited to deposits that consist of unusable/obsolete file formats or have inadequate description. Files that are larger in size may have higher standards for retention.

Withdrawal: If the uploaded research object is withdrawn, the reason for the withdrawal will be indicated on a tombstone page, which will henceforth be served in its place. Withdrawal is considered an exceptional action, which normally should be requested and fully justified by the original Depositor. In any other circumstance reasonable attempts will be made to contact the original Depositor to obtain consent. The DOI and the URL of the original object are retained.

Revocation: Content not considered to fall under the scope of the repository will be removed and associated DOIs issued will be revoked. Revocation is an exceptional action, and is reserved for deposits that are clearly inappropriate or threaten the functionality of the repository.

The Depositor represents and warrants that the deposit:

  • Consists of their original work, and/or that they have obtained all necessary rights to permit Caltech Library to use, duplicate and distribute the content, and that any third party work is clearly identified and acknowledged.
  • Does not violate any law or agreement, or infringe or violate any publicity, privacy or confidentiality rights of others, including but not limited to privacy rights protected by HIPAA or FERPA.
  • Does not contain high-risk confidential information such as social security numbers, credit card numbers, or other personal identifiers including biometric identifiers.
  • Does not contain software viruses or other malware designed to disrupt, damage or interfere with the proper function of any software or hardware.

Email: By entering an email address into the "Contributor Email" field, the user agrees to receive email alerts regarding their CaltechDATA record.  By using CaltechDATA, the user agrees to receive occassional email updates about CaltechDATA. The user can unsubscribe from these emails at any time by clicking the "Unsubscribe" link in the email alert or emailing data@caltech.edu.

Use of CaltechDATA is covered by the Institute Policy on Acceptable Use of Electronic Information Resources.
Caltech Library is not liable for any loss of or damage to the works deposited, either in whole or in part.
