Translations of science and technology articles are not always easy to find, but with a little luck, some perseverance, and use of the resources listed here, you increase your chances of finding the translation you need. This guide is intended to teach you how to use the various translation resources available within the Caltech libraries and give a basic strategy for finding a translation. Its main focus is on finding translations of journal articles in the areas of science, engineering and technology but it also includes information on finding conference proceedings, technical reports, monographs, newspapers, patents and standards.

There are a few things to keep in mind while searching for a translation. One thing that makes this task challenging is the unknown variable of when an article was actually translated. An article that was written in the 1950's may not have been translated until sometime in 1970. Therefore, the older the article the more territory you will have to cover in your search. Another factor to keep in mind is the transliteration and filing of journal titles under different systems from index to index. For example, the World Index of Scientific Translations uses the Wade-Giles system for Chinese transliteration but the Translations Register Index uses the Pinyin system. For the Chinese journal Acta Zoologica Sinica this means that in World Index of Scientific Translations you will be looking for citations under Tung Wu Hsueh Pao but in Translations Register Index you will have to search under Dongwu Xuebao. Some indexes cross reference to the other title and some do not. In any case, it is best to look under all known variations of a title because the filing of journal titles also varies from index to index. Doklady Akademiia Nauk SSSR in one index maybe filed under Akademiia Nauk SSSR Doklady in another. The more you know about the citation of the article whose translation you would like to find the better.

Basic Strategy

I have tried to create this guide so that users can quickly grasp which resources would be best to use to find the item for which they are looking. For older articles start with the Quick Chart to find which resources cover the type of document and date range of the item for which you want to find a translation. The first part of finding a translation I call the "clue-finding" stage: you want to start with the resources which cover the broadest ranges and make note of any clues (such as varying titles, abbreviations, etc.) you find along the way. For journal articles, it is a good idea to see first if a cover-to-cover English translation of the journal exists. Use CLAS (Caltech's online catalog), CASSI, or Journals in Translation to find out if a translation exists and/or any alternative titles or abbreviations by which the journal may be known. If a cover-to-cover translation does exist then sometimes it is easiest to go look at the actual journal to see if volumes and issues match up. Usually the exact paging will not coincide, however, many cover-to-cover translations include a cross reference in the table of contents from the original language to the English.

EXAMPLE:

If no cover-to-cover translation exists, then a good place to start is with the Consolidated Index of Translations into English I & II. CITE I & II have a wide coverage (1953-1984) and cumulate many of the other resources.

For more recent journal articles (within the past 5 years), if no cover-to-cover translation exists, your best bet is to have a search done on the World Translations Index database. This is an online database provided through a vendor, Dialog, which Caltech librarians can search for you.

To find a translation: If you are looking for a pre-1977 patent, find the section which contains the patent concordance (for patents 1977+ there is only one combined index). If you know the patent number and the country where the patent was issued, look up the country under the two-character country code (e.g., JP for Japan). Find the number of your patent (patent numbers are listed in ascending order after country). If related or equivalent patents exist, there will be a listing of these patents with their country codes noted below the main patent (see example under 3); this is called a "family listing." Scan the other 'family' members to see if there is a country code that would indicate that a patent is in English (US, CAN, GB, etc.) or a language you can read. If the patent number you are looking up is not the main patent, the index will refer you to the patent number where the full family listing is available (see example under 2).

To find a translation:
Look up the translated title of the journal you wish to find. If you do not know the translated (English) title use the Original Title Index to find the correct entry number for your journal. The full entry will give you the journal's original title(s), what dates the translation covers, whether it is cover-to-cover or selective, and what institution currently holds the journal.

To find a translation:
Look up author's name in personal author index. Scan titles to see if document has been translated. Translations begin with prefixes JPRS-, PB-### ###-T, or TT-.

For space and aeronautics related translations since 1962, try the NASA Technical Report Server (NTRS). Search under author's name or keywords of the English title (combine your search with JPRS* or TT* in the report number field). Papers written before 1962 but translated after are included.

To find a journal article translation:
In the Journal Citation Index look up title of journal in its original language. Scan listings under title for year, volume and page number of the article you wish to find. An accession number and where the translation originated (source) will be given. The source will be indicated by a symbol or an acronym. A listing of source codes and acronyms is in the "Directory of Sources" on page v.

To find a patent translation:
Look up country that issued patent you hope to find. Scan patent numbers to see if your patent is listed. If patent is listed, an accession number and the translation's originating source will be given. A listing of source codes and acronyms is in the "Directory of Sources" on page v.

Using the appropriate index look up document you are trying to obtain using whatever information you have (e.g., if you have author information then use author index). In all of the indexes you are given an accession number which can be used to locate the full information in the monthly register sections of the TRI.
